Aviators Crush CornBelters

Sunday, August 04, 2019

Thee Lafayette Aviators defeated the Normal CornBelters by a score of fourteen to four, in the Aviators penultimate game at Loeb Stadium.

The Aviators were once again led by strong starting pitching, with Jason DeCicco (Eastern Illinois) taking the mound for the Fly Boys. DeCicco went five innings, striking out five while only giving up three earned runs. The Aviators’ bats were just as strong, picking up where they left off of last night, where they scored twenty runs against Danville.

After the CornBelters got into the scoring column first in the top of the second, the Aviators responded with a Nick Mayhofer (Illinois-Springfield) sac-fly that evened the game until Miles Simington (Purdue) and Zach Schwartzenbeger (Toledo) pushed across three runs in the bottom of the third. This was apart of five consecutive inning where the Aviators scored a run, including the massive bottom of the sixth that broke the game wide open.

Miles Simington kicked off the bottom of the sixth with a three-RBI double that put the Aviators up ten to four, before he was driven in later by newcomer Tyler Womac. (Carl Sandburg) The Aviators add three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, two off of a Chris Monroe (Illionois-Springfield) home run and one more on a fielders choice, in which Aviators’ pitcher Nathanial Tate (East Tennessee State) scored after he was substituted into the game to pinch run for Miles Simington.

The Aviators now only have two game remaining in their sixth game season, one tomorrow against Champion City and then the Final game in Loeb Stadium history, Tuesday August fourth.
