Another Day, Another Walkoff

Sunday, June 17, 2018

In their second straight nail-biter at home, the Lafayette Aviators secured another walkoff win, this time 7-6 over the Butler Blue Sox.

The home team started off slow in the Father’s Day faceoff, yielding two runs almost immediately in the first inning. They would wake up quickly, posting a score of their own in both the second and third innings.

The teams jockeyed closely for position the entire way. The largest lead of the game came in the 5th inning when Butler pulled away 5-2. This lead would quickly dissipate with the Aviators adding two runs in the bottom of the inning to narrow the gap, and another in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game.

After a scoreless 7th the visitors got back in front with a run in the 8th, moving the score to 6-5 where it would stay until the bottom of the 9th.

The home team would load the bases with no outs, and Kam Smith would bring home Bryce Ball on a sac fly to tie the game. Brady Huebbe would step up and hit home Ben Tharp for the game-winning run, aided by a fielding error to cap the game.

Smith had a strong game, earning four RBIs and hitting a solo home run for the Aviator’s first score. Joe Crank and Tharp also crossed home plate twice.

Lafayette will take a one game-road trip Monday to play the Danville Dans before beginning a five-game home stand. First pitch for tomorrow’s game is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
